Most sight tests last between half an hour and an hour. During this time the optometrist will check the health of your eye as well as your vision. The eye will also be examined internally and externally for signs of high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Depending on age and any symptoms, the internal pressure will be measured as well the extent of the field of vision.
Who pays? Overall, the NHS covers the cost of some forty percent of sight tests. This includes those eighteen and under in full time education and pre-school children.
People over forty with glaucoma in the family and anyone over sixty are eligible every year or two. There is also help for those on income support and some other benefits.
The NHS may cover the cost of home visits for people unable to leave their homes without help.
